Six Tips for a Smooth Mini Session

A little preparation goes a long way. Dive in for six tips to help make your mini session a stress-free and joyful experience.

1. What to Wear or Not to Wear: The Big Question!

Feel good in jeans? Go ahead, wear your best ones! Pair them with your favorite top, accessories, and cute shoes. Think “date night”. Pick out your outfit first, then help your family with theirs. Stick to one style—either dressy or casual—and choose colors that coordinate but don’t match for a natural look. Have your outfits prepped a few days in advance to avoid last-minute stress.

2. Rest Up for Your Close-Up

Days aren’t as long in the fall, and schedules might get interrupted. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep and fit in naps if you can. A well-rested family is a photogenic family!

3. Prep Your Kids

Let your little ones know we’re going to have a fun time with a friend who’s bringing along a really fancy camera. Tell them it’s perfectly normal to feel a little nervous and that we’re going to have tons of fun laughing and playing together.

4. Kids Will Be Kids

If you have littles, pack a photo-friendly toy, noisemaker, or even a comforting blanket—anything to make your kiddos feel safe and happy. Promising a trip to your favorite ice cream parlor after the session works wonders for bigger kids. Believe it or not, this tactic sometimes works on spouses too!

5. Avoid the Hangry Trap

I highly recommend nobody comes on an empty stomach. Hunger can turn the mood sour real fast. Enjoy a light snack before getting dressed to keep those outfits clean and ready-to-go. I prefer to use treats as a last resort during the session, but you know your kids best so if you do decide to bring along treats, try to keep them small and easy to clean off hands and faces.

6. Timeliness is Key

Mini sessions are scheduled back-to-back, so punctuality is crucial. Plan on arriving at least five minutes early. We want to make the most of your time to capture as many gorgeous family memories as we can.
