How to choose a family photographer

Erie Family Photography

Photography businesses come in all shapes and sizes. From one (wo)man shows, like mine, to large retails studios and everything in between. If you did an internet search for a “family photographer” in your area, you’d undoubtedly get a long list of results! So, where then, does one even begin? Once you’ve read this blog, you’ll know exactly how to choose a family photographer! These apply whether you are wanting a family photographer to capture a milestone, like a birth or graduation, or an everyday moment in between.

Here are the five most important things that I consider when choosing a photographer for my family.

1. Quality

The best way to determine the quality and style of a photographer’s work is to look through the photos displayed on their website. You want to see photos that are in focus, and have a consistent exposure, tone and editing style. Using a fancy camera does not automatically result in quality photos! Many people own a fancy camera now days but few take the time to learn how to use them well.

2. Style

Since photography is an art, style can vary greatly from one photographer to the next. This makes style a personal preference. But remember, as mentioned before, the photos on a photographer’s website should have a consistent style! Are their photos bright and airy or dark and moody? Are the colors vibrant or subdued? Do they shoot on location or in a studio? Do their photos look natural or are they highly posed? This may seem obvious but it’s so important that I’m going to say it anyway :). Be sure to choose a photographer who has a style that you like!

3. The Experience

It is very common for people, including most photographers, to feel uncomfortable in front of a camera! A good photographer keeps this in mind and creates an experience that is as fun and stress-free as possible! Find a photographer who enjoys working with kids of all ages and wants to get to know you. Tell them about your family, your likes and dislikes. Follow them on social media. You’ll feel more like you are getting together with an old friend and this will come across in your photos! And if you work with the same family photographer year after year, you will be getting together with an old friend!

4. Your Expectations

If you have not worked with a professional photographer before you may be wondering what to expect. Or, you may be working with a new photographer and have expectations based on a previous experience. Either way, I encourage you to share your vision with your photographer before booking to make sure you are a good fit. You’ll learn about their creative process, what all is included and find peace of mind in knowing what to expect.

5. The Investment

The final factor to consider is the investment. Know what your end goals are. Know what is included in your investment and what would be extra. Do you want digitals? Wall art? An album? Prints? Holiday cards? Does the photographer offer professional products and are they optional or is there a required minimum purchase? Are there any additional perks like a pre-session consultation or a style guide to help you get the most out of your experience?

Once all the above boxes have been checked, you’ll have narrowed your options down to a handful of family photographers to choose from in your area. These family photographers should offer quality work in a style you like, and provide an experience that will meet your expectations, for your investment. And, if you’re thinking ahead and wondering what is the best time of day for family portraits, you can read a blog about that here.
